Behind the Ice: Training the Skills That Keep Our Arena Running

The Recreation Facilities Association of British Columbia (RFABC) hosted a two-day, in-person Arena Ice Maker course in Summerland on June 25–26. The hands-on training covered ice installation, paint, maintenance, and facility systems, and was taught by local Lead Hand and RFABC instructor Mike Fetterer.

The course emphasized the importance of precision and consistency in ice making, helping ensure safe, high-quality, and reliable playing conditions for users throughout the season. Strong technical skills in this area contribute directly to a better experience for athletes, community programs, and public skating.

Summerland has been making top-quality ice for 50 years, reflecting a long-standing tradition of excellence in arena operations and facility care.

Special thanks to the District of Summerland staff and the RFABC who supported the successful delivery of the training.
