What's Happening on Prairie Valley Road?

Over the next several weeks, residents will notice activity related to three separate infrastructure projects along Prairie Valley Road. These projects are important investments in our community and will help improve local services and transportation infrastructure.

Connecting Communities Sewer Expansion

A published Council priority since 2022, this project involves installing a new sewer main to connect District-owned lands west of the solar project to the recently constructed and developer-funded sewer system along Prairie Valley Road.  This next portion connecting to District-owned lands is fully grant funded.

When the sewer main was installed on Prairie Valley Road, it was specifically designed to accommodate future connections to areas north of the corridor, to support other future developments. To minimize future disruptions, a sewer connection point (stub) was installed during the original construction, eliminating the need to excavate the newly paved roadway.

Current construction activities are taking place above Prairie Valley Road. To ensure the safety of motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians from potential debris rolling down the bank, single-lane alternating traffic will be required at times. Concrete barriers have also been installed along the multi-use pathway to provide additional protection.

As crews progress farther north and away from the roadway, traffic interruptions will no longer be necessary. These traffic impacts are expected to continue for the next couple of weeks.

Prairie Valley Road Asphalt Seal Coat (Cartwright Avenue to Morrow Avenue)

As part of the recently completed road and sewer improvements, the paving contractor will be applying a seal coat (at their cost) to the new asphalt surface between Cartwright Avenue and Morrow Avenue.

This protective treatment helps seal the pavement, extending the life of the roadway and improving long-term performance.

The work is weather dependent and is currently scheduled to begin on June 29. During construction, motorists should expect single-lane alternating traffic through the work zone. The work is anticipated to take 2-3 days to complete.

Prairie Valley Road Repaving (Morrow Avenue to Holt Avenue)

The final project in the corridor is a budgeted capital project which will repave Prairie Valley Road between Morrow Avenue and Holt Avenue.  This is an area of high use and frequent compliant based on the current state of the road surface.

While not a full road replacement/rebuild, this work is substantial and will include excavation and replacement of key areas of deteriorated road base materials in the most heavily impacted sections of the eastbound lane, followed by asphalt overlay paving of both travel lanes.

Construction is scheduled to take place from July 6 to July 17. During this period, motorists can expect single-lane alternating traffic and, at times, detours utilizing local roads. Traffic control personnel will be on site whenever changes to traffic patterns are required.

Construction Updates

As with all construction projects, schedules are subject to change due to factors such as weather conditions, material availability, and site conditions. The District will continue to provide updates and notify residents of any significant schedule changes as soon as possible. Traffic control personnel will be present whenever lane closures, detours, or other traffic pattern changes are in effect.

Thank You for Your Patience

We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as this work is completed.

Prairie Valley Road projects represent significant investments in our infrastructure and will provide long-term benefits for residents. We are nearing the finish line, and once complete, Prairie Valley Road will be safer, more reliable, and looking better than ever.
