Think Before You Bin - It Comes Back to You!

This summer, the District of Summerland is stepping up efforts to reduce contamination in curbside compost. With new camera-equipped trucks, cart inspections, and upgraded composting equipment, we’re working hard to make sure only the right stuff ends up in the green bin

💡 Why does it matter?
Because that compost goes back into the soil — into gardens, orchards, and farms that grow our food. If it’s full of plastic or glass, we risk putting that back on our plates.

🍎 Since April, over 450 tonnes of food scraps have been composted — saving the District nearly $30,000 and helping local gardens grow. But contamination is still a challenge ❌

🚫 Common mistakes:
• Plastic, glass & paper food containers
• Pizza boxes & soiled cardboard (recycle instead!)
• Plastic bags & produce stickers — even “compostable” ones

👏 Most residents are doing it right — thank you!
