Summerland Explores Locations for Off-Leash Dog Park

The District of Summerland continues the search for a location for a year-round fenced off-leash dog park. A dog park has been recognized an important part of creating a dog-friendly community.

Three locations are currently being explored:
• Living Memorial Park (adapting ball diamond #3)
• Powell Beach Park (adapting ball diamond)
• Summerland Rodeo Grounds

The Summerland dog population is estimated to be around 2,000 based on the Canadian average of 41% of households owning at least one dog. However, this is a conservative estimate given the ongoing upward trend of dog ownership in Canada over the past 10 years.

There is evidence that pets provide health and wellbeing benefits to their owners. Dogs specifically contribute to the wellbeing of owners and their families by increasing physical activity and increasing social contact and conversation between walkers and their families and neighbours.

An online Zoom Public Open House has been scheduled for Thursday October 22 at 4:00 pm and 5:30 pm to present information about the proposed locations, answer questions and gain community input. Those interested in attending are asked to pre-register through the website at www.summerland.ca/dog-park-project
There will also be a Public Survey available on the website from October 23 to November 8.
