Earth Week & Day 2024

Earth week runs from April 21st-April 26th this year. The theme for this years Earth Week events is Sustainable Mobility, to align with Earth Day Canada’s theme. You can visit their website for helpful tips, and to enter in their sustainable mobility contest that end on April 22. www.earthday.ca/legday

A full list and details of each of Summerland’s Earth Week events are detailed below (Updated April 12):

Sunday April 21st-April 26th
Replenish Refillery is hosting a community garbage clean-up contest during Earth Week. Clean-up around your neighborhood in Summerland and bring in the trash to recycle and dispose of and receive a prize from the Refillery!

Come and pick up your compostable bag from Replenish, 9921 Main St, then clean-up around your neighborhood in Summerland. Bring the trash to recycle and dispose of, and receive a prize from the Refillery

Sunday April 21st-April 26th
The Museum is accepting submissions for their Earth Week Photo Contest. The theme is “In Your Own Backyard” - photos that capture the beautiful and precious environment of Summerland. There are three categories for entry: Children (12 and under), Teens (13-18), and Adult (19 and older). The winners will be selected by public voting and will receive prizes from local businesses!

Monday April 22-April 26th
To kick off Earth Day a Community Mobility Challenge will launch until April 26th. Walk, bike, scooter or use any other sustainable mobility device to get around to different activity stations around town. Pick up an activity sheet at the Aquatic Center and return it by Saturday April 26th once you have completed the circuit of activities to be entered into a grand prize draw!  

Saturday April 20th

What: Recycling Depot

When: 8am-3pm

Where: Arena (8820 Jubilee Rd E)

Items such as batteries, lighting fixtures and bulbs, TV’s and small appliances and electronics, glass bottles and jars, smoke detectors and alarms, foam packaging and flexible packaging will all be accepted at the recycling depot.

Sunday April 21st

What: 18th Annual Earth Day Celebration, and Earth Day Fair

When: 10am-1pm

Where: Memorial Park (9999 Wharton Ave)

The 18th annual Earth Day Celebration will be hosted by the Okanagan and Similkameen Invasive Species Society (OASISS) and Summerland Environmental Science Group (SESG). OASISS will have a number of native flowers, trees and shrubs for green thumbs to plant. We will start planting at 10am and will continue until all plants are in the ground. Please bring your shovels/trowels from home if you can!

District Community Services staff from the Landscaping Crew will be on-site providing support for the planting, in addition to the Summerland Fire Department who will have volunteer firefighters and their truck on site!

The Earth Day Fair will also be taking place from 10am-1pm, organizations and vendors from Summerland and the South Okanagan Similkameen will be on site to talk about invasive plants, land stewardship, landscaping for wildlife and much more!

Kid friendly activities and lawn games will also be available, and a worm composting session will be hosted at 11am by Replenish Refillery at Memorial Park.

Sunday April 21st

What: Pollinator Workshop

When: 11am-3pm 

Where: George Ryga Arts and Cultural Centre

The Arts Centre and Museum are coordinating a a kid-friendly pollinator workshop with sunflower plantings in recycled 2 L pop bottles; information on bees and pollinators will also be handed out.

Wednesday April 24th 

What: Sustainable Mobility Stations

Where: Jubilee/Rosedale bus stop and Skate Park

When: 8AM-9AM @Jubilee/Rosedale and 3PM-4PM @Skate Park

District staff will be hosting two sustainable mobility stations in honor of the Earth Day theme of Sustainable Mobility. If you are taking the bus, walking, biking or using any other sustainable mobility device, you can stop by for some snacks!

Friday April 26th

What: 'Life on Wheels' Film Screening

When: 6pm-8pm

Where: Summerland ORL Branch (9533 Main St)

Join us for a documentary film screening of 'Life on Wheels.' Post screening discussion will take place and door prizes will be raffled off at the end of the night, stick around to win! 

Film description: In this feature-length documentary, a collection of mobility mavens, technologists, and dreamers takes viewers on a journey through the highways, back alleys, and futurescapes of transportation – how we get from here to there. Life on Wheels addresses the promises, dangers, and absurdities of our current auto-centric transportation system and explores new possibilities and stories of change.
