The Engineering and Public Works Department is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and capital improvements of Summerland's roads, solid waste, water, sewer, electric, and cemeteries. The department employs approximately 48 staff who are specialized in a variety of fields including engineering technologists, equipment operators, power line technicians and certified water and wastewater system operators.

Prairie Valley Road and Rosedale Avenue Upgrades
The District of Summerland is currently working on an excitinig project which includes the revitalization of the two main entrances into town; Prairie Valley Road and Rosedale Avenue. This project includes a substantial amount of underground work including upgrades to sewer, water and storm systems as well as relocating much of the aerial electrical, Telus and Shaw cable to underground. The road structure will be entirely rebuilt and both roads newly paved. The completed work will showcase both main entry roads with landscaped boulevards, sidewalks and streetlights on both sides of the roads.
A substantial, positive change being made is the implementation of two roundabouts, one at the intersection of Rosedale Avenue and Peach Orchard Avenue and another at the intersection of Prairie Valley Road and Rosedale Avenue. Roundabouts are easy to use, reduce accident frequency and seriousness, whilst keeping the flow of traffic steady.
Three million dollars in funding through the Canada British Columbia Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is available to Summerland for this project which allows the District to proceed with much needed repairs and upgrades at a reduced cost. The timeline for completion of the works is scheduled for the end of March 2011.
