July 23, 2018 10:00 AM

Yesterday a planned ignition took place between the Mt. Aeneas and Munroe Lake fires. This controlled back-burning was done to remove the fuel on the steeper slopes, allowing crews to action the fire on flatter, safer ground. Back-burning will continue today with full ground crew, heavy equipment and air support.

Thank you to everyone involved, especially the ground and air crews working hard to contain and extinguish the fires. A special thank you to all area residents for their support, cooperation and understanding.

The Evacuation Alert for properties located on Bridgeman Road will be lifted later this morning.

At this time all other Evacuation Orders and Alerts for properties within the District of Summerland municipal boundaries remain in effect. The situation is being actively monitored and further orders will be lifted as it is deemed safe.

A second wildfire is threatening Summerland's boundary. The Brent Road fire originated in Peachland but has moved toward Summerland. It is located at the very north end of the municipality (backside of Garnet Valley lake) and is currently estimated to be 5-6 kms from the nearest structure in Summerland. Air tankers and helicopters are working the fire; and District of Summerland fire crews are monitoring.

DriveBC has announced that Highway 97 between Summerland and Peachland is currently closed due to wildfire.

Wednesday, July 18th, 11:30 AM

The wildfire which was ignited last evening from a lightning strike is currently approximately 50-70 hectares in size and is actively being attacked by multiple fixed wing air tankers.

At this time, the wildfire does not pose a risk to the District of Summerland, however the situation is being monitored closely as conditions can change quickly. Today's forecast calls for increasing winds this afternoon which could cause a further challenge for those fighting the fire.
