Call Before You Dig!

Underground power lines might be buried as shallow as 18 inches. Contact with a power line could seriously injure or even kill you. Call Summerland Power before digging at 250-494-0431 or stop by our office at 9215 Cedar Ave and fill out a Locate Request form. Locates are free of charge.

Help Fight Light Pollution

Have you every looked up at the night sky and wondered why it is difficult to see the stars or noticed that the view of the night sky gets better the farther you move from the city? Have you ever seen a dome of light over a city from a distance? If you have, you’ve observed light pollution. Light pollution is wasted light, light that unnecessarily illuminates upwards and outwards. Summerland Power is committed to reducing light pollution in Summerland by retrofitting street light fixtures with “cut-off” fixtures that prevent the light from escaping. You can help by changing your outdoor lighting to full cut-off fixtures, and using timers and motion sensors wherever possible. When choosing a fixture, look to see if it is recommended by the International Dark Sky Association.

Tree Trimming

The “Safety Standards Act” and the “Canadian Electrical Code” dictate that a minimum clearance space between trees and power lines is maintained. Summerland Power’s tree trimming program is intended to reduce tree-related outages, protect property and eliminate safety hazards to the public. Although proper line clearance work may not initially be “aesthetically pleasing”, after a few weeks regrowth tends to soften the effect of trimming. When planting new trees, please look around to see where overhead power lines may hinder growth in the future.

Summerland’s Electrical Bylaw No. 2255 explains that “Trees, shrubs or plants growing on private property shall not be permitted to interfere with the Corporation’s power lines, supply service wires or meter accessibility. It shall be the consumer’s responsibility to keep his/her trees, shrubs and plants cut or trimmed so that the Corporation’s power lines, supply service wires and meters are at all times well clear from contact with same.” It is a good practice for property owners to regularly trim their trees before they grow up into the power lines.
