AN ADULT CORRECTIONAL FACILITY IN SUMMERLAND?

The Province has sent out a request to all Okanagan communities to help
them identify a suitable site for a secure provincial correctional centre in
the Okanagan area to be completed by 2015. The proposed centre will have 360
cells (10 living units each with 36 cells), admissions area, administration,
staff services, food preparation, health care, segregation, inmate programs and
on-site park.
The following criteria are what the Province requires for a suitable
location:
-
A serviced buildable area of about 8 hectares (20 acres) including electricity, gas, water and sewer.
-
Not in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR)
-
Maximum probability of expeditious appropriate zoning
-
Minimal probability of a First Nations claim to
aboriginal title
-
Minimal negative environmental conditions
-
Narrowest dimension of site should exceed 170 metres
(560 feet)
-
Economic considerations such as costs to purchase,
re-zone and service and impact
on construction costs
-
The site should ideally be
located to minimize travel times
to the larger courts in the
Okanagan area.
